Purpose
The Association for Interdisciplinary Initiatives in Higher Education Law & Policy was created in 2001 to provide a mechanism across the disciplines for linking higher education with policy initiatives.
AII brings together culturally creative individuals who have emerged in the fields of higher education, law, and policy, such as lawyers, policy makers, administrators, leaders of Greek and other student organizations, prevention specialists, health educators, risk managers, faculty, judicial affairs and student life administrators, campus law enforcement administrators, and community leaders to study current law and policy issues and to develop initiatives for the successful management of the college and university life and learning environment.
Background
Institutions of higher education are confronted with a complex array of issues. Much of the vision in higher education has been limited by a reactive and insular approach to these issues. Too often, discipline-specific groups have tried to find solutions to these issues on their own. In fact, the issues that shape the success of higher education adminitration require systemic, interdisciplinary collaboration and approaches.
All too often, the law, with a perceived emphasis on liability avoidance, limits policy creation. This singular emphasis on liability avoidance may actually distance institutions from student life and learning, including those aspects of the university experience that define student life beyond the classroom. These realities underscore the need for a proactive, sustaining interdisciplinary organization that reinforces the interdependence between higher education law and policy through ongoing communication, professional development, and training.
